From 2018, all codeine containing products will be prescription only. This decision is not fully supported by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. It is hoped that there will still be access to pain relief in a timely manner at an affordable price and the sales will not divert to on line websites who may be selling the codeine containing painkillers in a less controlled manner.
