Pharmacy Business Development Consultancy

Pharmacy Business Development Consultancy

Pharmacy Consulting Ltd (PCL) have over time been asked to conduct a varied range of business development projects primarily in the community pharmacy sector ranging from projects relating to a single pharmacy, through projects for small pharmacy groups through to a project for a large national pharmacy chain.

The unifying theme of such work is the customers desire to get an expert and wholly independent view of the opportunities and threats which they face, and to do so in a timely and cost effective manner.

Case Studies

Expanding the Business Model for an Independent Pharmacy

An innovative independent pharmacy won a competition run by a national pharmacy magazine, the prize for which was a one day free consultancy visit from Pharmacy Consulting Ltd (PCL), who at the time wrote regular articles for the magazine concerned on the subject of pharmacy business development.

The Pharmacy Consulting Solution

PCL visited the customers in their original pharmacy in London, and looked with them at the initial business model that they had developed. PCL then suggested ways that the model could be further developed and rolled out over time to additional pharmacies.

The customer benefits

The customer decided to follow up some of the ideas and suggestions put forwards by PCL. Over time they developed an innovative shared ownership model and thereby acquired a number of additional pharmacies. As a small group now they have gone on to develop something of a reputation for innovative service provision attuned to local customer needs, which has even helped them win competitive bids for LPS contracts in their region.

Post Acquisition Report on Small Pharmacy Group

The new owner of a small group of 3 pharmacies in London asked Pharmacy Consulting Ltd (PCL) to assess how well each of the pharmacies acquired was being run, and what opportunities or problems might be apparent. PCL was also asked to contribute to the staff handbook for new company which was to set out rules to which staff would be expected to adhere

The Pharmacy Consulting Solution

PCL arranged for their senior consultant, who was a qualified pharmacist, to initially work in each pharmacy for a day as a locum. This gave an opportunity to see how the businesses were truly operated. Subsequently, pre-arranged return visits were made to each pharmacy, with the staff being aware that a business consultant was to visit. The combination of intelligence gathered during both types of visit allowed PCL to advise the client of a considerable number of operational areas requiring attention. PCL also identified some business development opportunities that had not previously been identified

The customer benefits

Although the client was a pharmacist, and had carefully studied the pharmacies before acquiring them, he had nagging doubts that what he saw when he was present in the pharmacies was not representative of what customers experienced. This doubt indeed proved to be the case in several areas, where at best poor habits had crept in since the change in ownership. The report thus allowed the client to tighten up controls on security and also to increase investment in staff training. The work conducted by PCL on the staff handbook, meant that staff knew exactly where they stood on a whole raft of subjects where previously no-one knew what the company policy was.

IT Systems Review for a National Pharmacy Chain

Pharmacy Consulting Ltd (PCL) were asked by the IT manager of a national pharmacy chain to independently review every Patient Medication Record (PMR) software system available on the UK market and submit a report on the advantages and disadvantages of each software system versus their existing software system. It was felt necessary for this review to be done independently as it was anticipated that any proposal to change systems would result in a strong defence to keep the current system and a detailed scrutiny of any proposed alternative

The Pharmacy Consulting Solution

The project was conducted by initially designing a detailed questionnaire to be submitted to every UK provider, and to conduct a detailed analysis of the responses. Each provider then considered potentially suitable as an alternative software supplier to the customer by PCL, was then visited to verify responses and to evaluate their future potential and current suitability to supply a national pharmacy chain.

The customer benefits

The PCL report rapidly highlighted to the customer that there were at least two PMR system providers who could meet or exceed the customer’s current and anticipated functionality requirements. Both would also free the customer of its existing commitment to source medicines as part of its software supply contract. This knowledge allowed the customer to move forwards both on its IT and product sourcing strategies, in the knowledge that a detailed and unbiased analysis had been conducted.
