The Government is considering merging the nine regulators into one, which would be responsible for registering all healthcare professionals and carrying out disciplinary procedures. There are also rumours of the GMC and NMC merging and Pharmacists, Dentists and opticians would be merged. Nothing has been officially announced yet but we should watch this space. There is a need for harmonisation of standards, however the specific training needs and standards for each profession would have to be taken into consideration and the specific expertise of each regulator would hopefully not be lost.
